from an original oil painting by Douglas Van Howd. A numbered edition of 5,000 plates. Plate N0. 3184. Production date 1979. Plate size approx 10.50 inches. Suggested Retail Price $85.00.
Douglas Van Howd is an American artist known throughout the world for his fine oil paintings and bronze sculptures of wildlife. Gifted from an early age and raised with an understanding of wildlife, he sought the career of wildlife artist through his formative years and gained formal training at the highly acclaimed Art Center School in Los Angeles.
First hand experiences add fresh new dimensions of authority to his work as he studies and paints on location both at home and abroad. His entire family traveled and lived in Kenya in 1977, his fourth African trip, so that he might experience Africa in depth. He returns each year to do further study and enrich his storehouse of experiences with the wildlife and people.
His oils reflect his study of the masters and hang in many prominent collections. In 1978 his work received medals both in oil and sculpture at the showing of Wildlife Artists International. "Sheena" is an excellent example of the combination of fine detail with lifelike softness he has mastered. This is the first of Doug's work to be brought to the plate collector.
Van Howd's work has become a vehicle through which he raises funds for conservation and defends the causes of diminishing wildlife in its struggle for survival throughout the world.
