Children at Christmas Collection - "A christmas Prayer" by Donald Zolan. This is the second issue in this series. Issue date 1982. Plate size approx 10.25 inches. Suggested Retail $80.00
As soon as I began this series about children at Christmas I knew I wanted it to include at least one plate about faith. My problem was how to portray faith well.
I finally thought of that look of complete trust I sometimes see on a small child's face. It usually comes mostly from the eyes — big, round, unblinking eyes. This was enough to get me started on "A Christmas Prayer."
I've probably never done a painting where the eyes were so important. I had a wonderful subject — a beautiful little girl with cheeks and little lips almost like a baby's. Now I just had to get that trusting look in her eyes.
I imagined how Christmas Eve would be for her. She's probably been hearing songs all day about wonderful things like heavenly angels and the Christ Child. Now it's bedtime.
I didn't want to show her with her head bowed or I couldn't show her eyes well. So I painted her as if she were looking out her window at the starry sky over her town. I made her eyes wide open and focused on something very distant. Maybe she sees the Christmas star or some of those angels she's been hearing about. If anyone can, it's probably a child. I let the main light in the painting come from where her eyes are focused and fall directly on her face. It's a very pure white light, almost a heavenly light. That's why her gown is so white.
I had to work to get her whole face to look completely relaxed. I wanted this to seem a very still moment, just a moment between her and God. I had to redo her mouth several times. In the background I used bright golds, blues and a touch of red to give a sense of the joy of Christmas.
In my mind I see her kneeling beside a bed piled high with quilts and blankets. Maybe there's snow outside. When she's said her prayers she'll go to sleep thinking of the baby Jesus in his crib in a place far away on another night long ago.
Whatever she's thinking behind those big dark eyes of hers, I have a feeling God is listening with a smile.
