Children at Christmas Collection - "Christmas Secret" by Donald Zolan. Issued for Christmas 1984. Fourth issue in the series. Plate size approx 10.25 inches. Suggested Retail $80.00
At my house when I was young, Christmas season always began somewhere around Thanksgiving when my mother started making her annual fruit cakes and cookies and Christmas puddings. Then we started getting more mail, more telephone calls, more visitors. My parents came home with big packages and there were certain closets and drawers where I wasn't allowed to look. My father brought home the tree. We all decorated that and we put other Christmas decorations all over the house. My parents played carols on the radio and read me Christmas stories at bedtime.
I got incredibly excited. Every day seemed like twenty days now. I thought Christmas would never come.
Then finally it was there — the night before Christmas. Naturally I didn't want to go to sleep. I thought I might sleep right through Christmas. Of course I got into my cold bed anyway, watched the lights go out and then lay there in the dark and listened. Even after my parents went to bed the house seemed to be full of strange noises — all kinds of cracks and squeaks and maybe a window rattling from the wind.
What I really wanted to do is what the little girl in "Christmas Secret" has done. I wanted to get up and see if Christmas was already happening.
This little girl has a dog she really loves and trusts. Before painting the picture I imagined her lying there in the dark, hearing the noises, getting more and more curious and excited, then finally waking her clog, getting on her robe and creeping into the hall, then down the stairs one by one. She's treating herself and the dog to a real little adventure on the most exciting night of the year.
