The black storm clouds that have turned day to night on the Great Plains are passing now, blown by a stiff wind northward to Canadian territory. The emerging sun throws its spotlight on a band of Blackfoot warriors waiting out the storm on the prairie.

Armed with lances, bows and arrows, and carbines, they have set off to recapture the horses their village lost to Crow raiders the night before. The horse was a tribe's most valuable possession—a must for transport, hunting and warfare. So this raid could not go unanswered.

The warriors are led by Red Cloud, a proud figure whose eagle-feathered war bonnet and battle flag attest to his many exploits in battle. The painted hand on his horse proclaims his prowess at "counting coup"—touching an enemy in hand-to-hand combat—the highest glory for a warrior.

This is the dramatic scene that comes to life in "At Storm's Passage," artist Harry Schaare's masterful portrait of Indian life on the Great Plains. All the splendor of the artist's original oil-on-canvas masterpiece has been re-created for you to enjoy on fine porcelain rimmed in 22-karat gold.

The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of
work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
