Footsteps of the Brave -- "Path of His Forefathers" by artist Harry Schaare -- Bradford Exchange 1993 -- Fifth plate in this series. Plate size is approx 8 inches. Suggested Retail $60.00
One of the seven tribes of the hard-riding Lakota Nation, the Oglala Sioux are bison-hunting Plains Indians without equal. Their way is that of the nomad, living in tipis and following the bison herds with dog and travois (two crossed poles loaded with goods, ends dragging on the ground) long before the advent of ponies.
From generations of eking out a hard living in the region near the Black Hills to countless years of warring with their rivals, the Oglala are among the most highly skilled fighters in the region. Far from trying to wipe out their enemies, braves like the ones depicted in "Path of His Forefathers" merely are dedicated warriors hoping for a good skirmish and to outmaneuver their foe by cunning, deception, and surprise — and maybe to steal a few horses in the process.
In Plate Five, "Path of His Forefathers" by artist Harry Schaare, we see a small band of Oglala looking fierce in their battle garb. Comfortably astride ponies colorful with tribal symbols, each brave wears notched eagle feathers to indicate his past victories — one for each enemy he has touched without drawing blood.
The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
