Ages ago, when the Spirit of the Buffalo had not yet led his children to the Plains, the People ate pine nuts, berries and roots. But meat was needed to make the People strong and prosper.
Gatherer was a brave who knew a man wasn't a man if he could not provide for his family. So Grandmother Spider gave him three tasks—to carve a Hawk's talon; to strike as swiftly as the Bear; and to swim as an Otter. Then she would grant him meat.
Gatherer went to his Brother, the Hawk, and together they made the first spear. From Bear he learned to strike quickly, and Otter taught him to swim the bright waters. When Grandmother Spider saw this, she created fish to multiply in all the lakes and streams for the People, for now Gatherer could teach the People to strike quickly with their spears while swimming in the bright waters—and the
People would never be hungry.

After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
