Talking Wolf is now the provider for his family, and for those of his clan who need his help. For it is the way of his people that no one be allowed to starve and that the strong must provide for the weak.

Game has been scarce, and though a storm threatens this day, he has gone forth to ask one of his animal brothers to give its life, so that Talking Wolfs people may survive. He has prayed to the spirits of the elk and the antelope, but has not found either.

Stopping to give his weary pony a rest, he hears a barely perceptible snarl. lie turns to see a great cougar stalking him! She moves to defend her mostly grown cubs on the bluff beyond her.

Normally, he would not hunt the noble cougar, especially if her cubs were young—but they are old enough to survive on their own and his family must have food. He makes a quick pledge to the spirits: if the cougar comes closer he will send forth his spear. And he will chant a special prayer this night to thank sister cougar for her sacrifice.

The incomparable artistry of Russ J. Docken once again tells of a hunter at one with the spirits—a fitting finale for a superb series.

The creation of the line collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
