It is one of those fine, crisp Autumn days when the vibrantly colored foliage makes the blue sky even bluer. You are walking through a forest of molten gold, fiery scarlet, hammered bronze and copper leaves, when suddenly a leaf zips past you — going faster than a leaf ought! It vanishes in the deep crimson leaves of a bush, but a rich, spirited warble provides the clue. You have discovered a Purple Finch and his dappled brown mate resting on their long migration southward.
About the size of a sparrow,
the Purple Finch is actually more of a dusty raspberry color than true purple, offering illusive camouflage in an Autumn woods. But his preferred habitat is a mixed conifer forest, the pine green setting off his dashing plumage admirably.
