From South Dakota to the mountains of southern California, Arizona and Texas, the Western Tanager bellows out its boisterous song, celebrating the joyous Autumn colors that have overcome the forests.

The male and female sport handsome yellow plumage and are almost identical save for the male's fiery red head. Both are perched high atop a Western Ash tree, eyeing the scrumptious orange-red berries that stand out against a cluster of delicate white blossoms.

First discovered in 1808 during the expeditions of Lewis and Clarke, this showy bird was originally known as the Louisiana Tanager. But gradual movements to the west prompted bird watchers to give it a name more appropriate to its actual habitat.

Having more muted colors and lacking the red cap of the male, the female Western Tanager is less conspicuous and able to build her virtually undetectable nest high in the trees. Yet on this glorious Fall day, the multi-colored leaves of crimson and gold seem to conceal even the flashy male.
