Jim Hautman's Classic Waterfowl collection, "Wood Ducks: Misty Retreat" by artist Jim Hautman. Third issue in the series. Bradford Exchange, 1995. Size of the plate is approx 8.5 by 6.75 inches. Oval plate. Suggested retail $60.00.
Day has not yet broken over the marsh, and the cool morning will soon give way to the humid heat of a summer afternoon. Mist rises from the waters like a gossamer veil woven of pearls, moonstones, and dove grey silk. Even the clouds are dark and sullen before the dawn, casting the land in a monochromatic drabness.
But from the dry, rustling reeds, a glowing flash of brilliant color emerges. With hues of glimmering russet, burnished gold, metallic green, crimson, lustrous blue-black and striking white, the resplendent male wood duck saunters proudly from cover. His sharp, hooked claws help him cling to the gracefully curved driftwood log as he descends like a prince down to the calm water. His mate drifts serenely alongside, her camouflage colors modestly accented by a dashing white eye ring. Loveliest of all waterfowl, and with a low, sweet call, this native American waterfowl is a sight to brighten the darkest day.
Multiple award-winning artist Jim Hautman presents a classic portrait of this famed American bird with the instinctive artistry and uncanny realism of a true master.
The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
