Soaring at a dizzying altitude of 100 feet above the crashing California breakwaters, the American Osprey spies a sunfish swimming near the surface. The osprey hovers for an instant, tucks his 72-inch wings neatly against his body, and plummets with the force and speed of an arrow headfirst into the water. One deviation from his position would be like flying into solid rock, but the osprey is a master diver, cutting smoothly through the surface to catch the fish deftly. Aloft in a surge of foam, the successful osprey wings hack to the nest and his two hungry chicks.

Also known as the Fish-hawk, the osprey is a favorite of farmers for his protection of chicks (and farmers' chickens) from other raptors. Farmers set cartwheels on poles to entice ospreys to build their nests near the chicken coop.

Robert Copple captures this noble sea bird of prey in the timeless instant before his daredevil plunge into the surf. Mr. Copple's Illusionary Images technique combines stunning photographic landscapes with meticulously painted images for a truly compelling plate series, New Horizons.

The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
