Night Songs: The Loon collection, "Moonlight Echoes" by Jim Hansel. First issue in the series. Bradford Exchange, 1994. Plate size approx. 8 inches. Suggested Retail Price $60.00.

The moonlight paves a silvery path on the dark midnight waters of this hidden wilderness lake. Gliding toward the sparkling beams are a male common loon, his mate, and their pair of fluffy chicks. Night is when the loon comes forth to warble its haunting songs — and these loons are introducing their newborn chicks to its pleasures.

In "Moonlight Echoes," artist Jim Hansel employs a soft, almost impressionistic style to convey the shadowy beauty of the wilderness at night — setting off his very dramatic and realistic image of the loons with their matching checkerboard markings. We can almost imagine the eerie flute-like calls of the loons as they make their way past the firelit windows of a lonely fisherman's cabin. And we can't help wondering how it would feel to be inside, hearing those other-worldly sounds.

Small wonder that native Americans once believed the cry of the loons were the voices of their ancestors, calling from the spirit world. Now, as re-created on fine porcelain, Jim Hansel's "Moonlight Echoes" brings you all the magic and mystery of this ancient water bird to enjoy again and again.

The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
