It is midnight, and the moon shines like a beacon on the misty waters of this wilderness lake. A pair of loons paddle along on their nightly foray, pausing now and then to warble their haunting calls that have so fascinated humankind through the long centuries. (The Cree Indians believed the loon's songs were the anguished cries of dead warriors denied entrance to heaven. The Inuit or Eskimos thought the loons were messengers of the Gods.)

In "Nocturnal Glow," artist Jim Hansel creates a dreamlike vision of the forested lake with a fisherman's tent the only human presence. Through the lamplit walls, we can see the fisherman preparing his gear for the morning. The loons, peering sideways in typical bird fashion, regard him curiously.

A species all to themselves, loons are the most ancient of all water birds, dating back it is thought, millions of years. Without secluded wilderness lakes like this one, they cannot breed and raise their families. "Nocturnal Glow," portraying these magnificent birds with their sparkling checkerboard wings and ruby eyes, preserves their beauty for you forever.

The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a find ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
