Night Songs: The Loon collection, "Silent Passage" by Jim Hansel. Ninth issue in the series. Bradford Exchange, 1994. Plate size approx. 8 inches. Suggested Retail Price $60.00.

A ruby-eyed common loon escorting her tiny chick across a moonlit wilderness lake falls silent at the sight of an intruder. Although the loon is famous for its beautiful warbling night song, this moment may be best devoted to silence.

Should too many humans appear on this tranquil lake, the loon will not breed. And that would be very sad indeed, because this beautiful bird with its distinctive checkerboard markings and haunting song goes back literally millions of years. We should not let it disappear in our time.

The fisherman, out late in search of the crafty walleye, is not aware he has a feathered audience. Almost hidden in the mist that rises around him, he paddles toward his lonely tent on the shore. Loon and chick, resting amidst the lily pads, wait for him to pass. Like the single waxy blossom, they're set aglow by the light of the moon.

"Silent Passage" is the ninth plate in Jim Hansel's collection, Night Song: The Loon. Once again. with his richly realistic detail, his use of deep color and dramatic composition, Mr. Hansel creates a moonlit moment in the wilderness that you can enjoy forever.

The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
