Shoving the sheers aside and sunning oneself on the windowsill is certainly a necessary pastime for any self-respecting housecat. But even the attraction of a prerequisite afternoon snooze pales in comparison to the intrigue of birdwatching.

Today, these two sleek kitties were curled up together on the back of the sofa, napping near the window, when musical chatter and bright movements caught their attention. Pressing their quivering noses to the windowpane, they now sit mesmerized by the antics of colorful garden visitors who seem to be having quite a lively discussion as they hop about on the snowy fir branches.

"Wouldn't you know it," the cardinals seem to be saying, "just when we find a stash of succulent pine nuts, a pair of nosy cats appear!" Eager for the seeds, but annoyed by this brash display of ill manners, the trio of feathered diners is quite put out.

The vivid artistry in Persis Clayton Weirs's "Birdwatchers" plate brings us a scene so endearing that we find ourselves watching our own backyards a little more carefully for similar amusing encounters among the Nosy Neighbors.

The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the U.S., a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully recreate the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was made in France and Germany and permanently fired into the Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the U.S.
