The garden is quietly still, the mingled fragrances of the flowers permeating the air. Seemingly out of nowhere. sailing slowly like hits of gossamer tissue adrift on a breeze, two Monarch butterflies glide silently to rest among the geraniums. One spreads his wings to enjoy the sun while the other contentedly flicks his wings to and fro.

The scene is one repeated often during summer and fall, and yet endlessly fascinating. In reality, it could not be viewed from so intimate a perspective without spoiling the moment. Were we to step this near. disturbing the calm of the morning, the Monarchs would surely float away. Only through a high-powered lens would it he possible to see them this distinctly. and even then, we would not sec them as Lena Liu depicts them: from a perspective carefully chosen she has skillfully delineated all the lovely colorings and markings of the Monarchs while allowing the flowers in the background to become simply presences that serve as subtle foils for the butterflies' vivid beauty.

It is doubtful that a tableau of such sensitivity could he created using the traditional techniques of applying pigment to canvas or board. Here. by employing t he ancient Oriental art of painting on silk in her original painting, Ms. Liu achieves a delicacy of tone and subtlety of line that is quite breathtakingly lovely and that allows her to move confidently from the shimmering light that envelops the geraniums in a light mist to the more striking colorings of the butterflies. The effect is unique: it is as if We were looking at a particularly luminous stained-glass window.

Painting on silk demands great patience and consummate skill. Each brushstroke or daub will, if not controlled, bleed away from its intended area, and even the agents which control the spread of the paint, such as gum pereha, must be applied with the utmost care and precision.

Combining years of training in the rigorous discipline of Oriental art with her ongoing study of Western design techniques, Ms. l.iu has developed a truly distinctive style. Without question. "Monarch Butterflies" is a premier example of her work.
