Practice Makes Perfect collection, "More Than A Mouthful" by artist Lynn Kaatz. Sixth issue
Quantity:
Practice Makes Perfect collection, "More Than A Mouthful" by artist Lynn Kaatz. Sixth issue in a numbered series. Bradford Exchange, 1994. Plate size approx. 8 inches. Suggested retail $60.00.

Teaching your dog to lie down. Puppies, like the beautiful Brittany spaniel featured in "More Than a Mouthful," often don't need much help with lying down. In fact, they're usually so overcome with fatigue from the rigors of playing, chewing, and growing all day that they just flop when the mood strikes and fall soundly asleep.

But there will come a time when you want your dog to lie down on command, and teaching it at an early age assures a well behaved dog. It is best if your dog has learned (or is at least making an effort to learn!) the "sit" command, since your dog will lie down from a sitting position.

Place a training collar and leash on your dog, and have him or her sit on your left. Then, say the dog's name and voice the command -Dowwwwn," extending the vowel sound as you place your dog in the down position. Do this by slowly lifting the dog's front paws while simultaneously (and gently) pushing down on the shoulders or pulling forward on the leash. When your dog is down, praise it enthusiastically with "Good Dowwwn!" With a small treat as a reward (and lots of practice), your dog will quickly learn the meaning of the word.

The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by many skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments chosen to re-create the beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
