On a fine April day in Coos Bay, Oregon, Louise decided it would be a splendid afternoon to plant the purple petunias and yellow pansies she had bought in town.

She cleared the winter's pine cones from the rich, warm soil, and dug her hands deep into the loam. Carefully she arranged each tiny seedling, planting each to get the color mix just right. As she stood up to admire her work, an excited orangy-red buzz swept past her sun-bonneted head. She caught a glimpse of the intruder only as he darted past, and was startled until she heard a familiar whine and rattle.

The bright red male darted around for a second arcing, oval dive above the garden. "Henry," Louise cried running toward the house, "they're back!"

The Rufous Hummingbirds had returned to nest in their big backyard pine as they have for years. A timeless radiance in red, gold and green that heralded spring.

Louise and her husband rushed to the porch where they could see the darlings they had enjoyed every spring. They were delighted that these charming little pearls of nature had come back again!

The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the tine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
