In the spiritual beliefs of the Plains Indians, man, earth, sky, and all of nature are hound together as one, a Sacred Circle with no beginning or end. Even the buffalo, which Native Americans hunted for food, clothing, shelter, and tools, was a brother in their view. And so before they hunted these creatures who were related to them within the Sacred Circle, the shaman of the tribe called forth the spirit of the buffalo to ask for its blessing to assure that the hunt went well. This is the ritual depicted with detailed authenticity in "Before the Hunt," Plate One in artist Kirk Randle's The Sacred Circle collection.
The traditional before-the-hunt ceremony is ageless, part of tribal customs for as long as anyone can remember. For the Plains Indians, the buffalo was closer to the Great Spirit than any of nature's myriad other creatures. The shaman's prayers to the buffalo, therefore, were transmitted to the generous giver of all blessings, thus completing the Sacred Circle.
The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
