It is the night before a feared enemy attack, and these Plains Indians are about to begin the Wolf Dance. This they will do in the hope of gaining the blessing and support of the wolf spirit.
In the spiritual beliefs of the Plains Indians, man, earth, sky, and all of nature are bound together as one, in a Sacred Circle with no beginning or end. Thus, in their view, the wolf is their brother, and they hope it will share with them its great power and strength. The wolf spirit also has the power to heal (important, if some are wounded in the coming battle).
In "The Wolf Dance," Plate Five in his Sacred Circle collection, artist Kirk Randle gives us a detailed and accurate portrayal of this ancient and colorful ritual. The two shaman or spiritual leaders of the tribe wear wolf headresses as they lead the ceremony. And a wolf figure has been painted on the firelit tipi wall. In the sky above, the shadowy wolf spirit has already appeared, and, if we look closely, we can see other wolf spirits on the rocks nearby. When the wolf spirit conveys the dancers' appeal to the Great Spirit above, the Sacred Circle will be complete.
