The young Shoshone Indian is ready to begin his journey from boy to man. He must ride into the harsh, unforgiving wilderness of the snow-capped mountains and encounter his personal spirit, the high-flying messenger of the gods, the magnificent hawk.
It is a perilous quest with no guarantee that he will find the spiritual union he seeks. But the Sacred Circle Dance of the tribal shaman draws the Spirit of the Hawk to hover almost imperceptibly above the youth. The boy does not see it, nor does his mother and sister who lovingly adorned his warm antelope garments with dyed porcupine quills. But the shaman senses its potent essence in the rising smoke of the tipi fires.
Sweeping his feathered arms in imitation of the powerful wings of the hawk, the shaman chants the sacred words that will bind the spirit to the boy. to keep him safe
and well-fed in the dangerous wilderness. Within the holy circle, the shaman and boy are transformed into the majestic bird of prey, becoming one with its great heart and boundless flight. The boy will return from his quest a man; a proud Shoshone warrior.
