It's a toss-up what spreads out wider in Montana's Big Hole Valley, the blue skies or the endless pastures. Seth and Guy are moving the Circle Z's prize bulls to the lush pastures close to the ranch house, to come a-courting the pretty-eyed cows already waiting.

Their horses—"cutters"— trot along the fringes of the herd, keeping an eye out for any irascible bull that might cause trouble. The cow-dog Spike weaves deftly through the massive hooves, his yips and nips keeping them rolling.

A herd of elk, lured into trespassing by the verdant grass of the untouched pastures, is alarmed by the trembling earth and thunder of the drive. They leap the split log fence with amazing bounds. As Seth points out a huge, twelve-point buck, Guy sights down an imaginary rifle, feeling the primal excitement of the hunt beating in his chest. But the cowboys will have to wait another month, for October is elk hunting season. September is given entirely over to the care of champion bulls.

Experience the life of a range-riding cowboy with artist Larry Zabel's thrilling "September Bulls."
