Signs of Spring -"The Proud Parents" by James P Gallagher. Fifth issue in the series. Bradford Exchange, 1994. Plate size approx 8 inches. Suggested retail $50.00
The dogwood tree was still in full flower when the first tremulous movements stirred one brown- and blue-dappled egg. Mother Cardinal felt it against her biscuit-colored breast, and immediately called to her mate with a melodious, excited whistle. He arrived in a crimson flurry of wings, his tufted red crest raised high above his head and quivering in anticipation. They both gazed at the precious bundles lying in the nest, safe within the woven tendrils of bark strips, roots, and twigs, lined with fine grass, feather down and hair.
The egg shook even more, nudging its two nestmates from their own prenatal slumber. The parent cardinals could hear the first cacophony of peeps from within the thin eggshells.
Suddenly a strong, miniature beak broke through the fragile membrane and shell that sheltered him for weeks ... and the newborn cardinal fledgling took his first breath of dogwood-perfumed air.
Artist Joe Thornbrugh combines his lifelong study of wildlife and gifted artistry to create these highly detailed portraits of a young cardinal family in those wondrous, breathless moments of birth.
The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
