The tribe had set their winter camp along the rushing waters of what the White Man called Snake River. The winter had been brutal, and tonight was one of the worst that White Bear could remember. Outside her father's tipi the wind whipped the deep white snow into a furious frenzy.
Tonight even the wolves were buried deep in their dens with luxurious tails wrapped snugly around them. But White Bear clutched her heavy robe tight around her fragile body and slipped into the milky light of the full moon lost in a swirl of blowing snow.
She was promised to Dancing Crow, a proud warrior and important leader. He would pay her family much for the honor of her hand in marriage. White Bear knew her duty, she admired her father and respected his wishes. But she could never marry Dancing Crow because her heart belonged to another.
She stole silently across the frozen scene and slipped into a small tipi apart from the others. Inside a fire burned merrily and she fell into the arms of the only man she would ever tnily love.
