Special Moments Collection - "Sunny Surprise" by Donald Zolan. Pemberton & Oakes 1989. Second issue in this series. Plate size approx 7.5 inches. Suggested Retail $50.00
Do you remember those golden summer days when you were small and could make some new discovery almost everywhere you turned?
The little boy in "Sunny Surprise" has just found a butterfly on top of a rock. Joy and wonder are practically lighting up his face right now because he's probably never been this close to a butterfly before. He can see how the sunlight shines through its wings the way it does through stained glass.
He has probably watched butterflies before because there's nothing under the sun like a butterfly. It doesn't crawl like a caterpillar or hop like a grasshopper or sail through the air like a bird. It flutters around. It's one of nature's most amazing little flying machines. A butterfly wakes up your sense of wonder, especially when you're very young and everything is for the first time for you.
The boy in "Sunny Surprise" is just a whisper away from his butterfly. He knows it can fly over bushes, trees, houses, but now it's with him.
I filled the art with fine detail, sharp contrasts and very bright sunlight. I wanted the day to look like one of those brilliant summer days when the sky is a clear blue from horizon to horizon. I showed sunlight pouring down on the rock and the boy's back. It's making his hair shiny and falling on his hands and the tip of his ear and the tip of his nose. It's shining through the butterfly's wings and putting the butterfly's shadow down on the rock.
I wanted the picture to bring out the warmth of the day and the wonder the boy feels at this very still moment. It's an extraordinary moment both for the boy and the butterfly.
