More than any other bird, the eagle has symbolized sacred power to Native Americans. The eagle is believed to be a messenger to the most powerful of the spirits. Just see how high it flies, so high it disappears into the clouds above!
That is why the eagle feather is an "honor feather," awarded for such acts of courage as "counting coup"—touching a live enemy in battle. Every brave yearns to wear an eagle feather in his hair.
But the eagle is so revered that some Native Americans hesitate to destroy the bird just to acquire its feathers. Julie Kramer Cole shows one way to get around this. A clever brave uses a rope suspended from a cliff top to gently remove an eagle's feather from its nest as the bird soars away.
With her ingenious "hidden image" artistry, Ms. Cole portrays a pair of eagle spirits watching the brave's harmless "borrowing."
The creation of the fine collec- tor's plate you have just acquired and whose authen- ticity is certified by this docu- ment is the result of work by an interna- tional cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and perma- nently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
