Coming from a long and impressive line of Canadian Pacific passenger trains, the "Dominion" distinguished itself as one of the finest conveyances in transcontinental service in North America.

The usually double-headed train was frequently assisted by a third locomotive, as on this day in the early 1950's, to provide extra power for the demanding grades of the Rocky Mountains. The lead engine No. 5934, a 2-10-4 "Selkirk" type, is one of 35 such engines built (in three sub-classes; Montreal Locomotive works 1929. 1938 and 1949).

Named in an employee contest after the rugged mountain range. the "Selkirks" represented the ultimate in Canadian steam power and rightfully claimed the title as the largest and heaviest locomotives in the British Commonwealth.
