The third issue in a Wedgwood Series "The Blossoming of Suzanne". The First Collector's edition by Mary Vickers. Strictly Limited edition of 24,000. Production year 1979. " In Suzanne's far away look, her dreams become apparent, and I long for them all to come true." Mary Vickers Wedgwood Bone China, Made in England. Plate Size 9 inches. Suggested list price: Suggested retail $80.00
She is Suzanne, the only daughter of artist Mary Vickers, and on this lovely morning, her large blue eyes appear lost in some distant daydream as she brushes her golden hair.
Behind her, the sunlight filtering through an unseen window plays in prism-like colours against the wall. The oval looking-glass reflects the pensive tilt of her head; at the mirror 's base, a vase of wild flowers repeats the sapphire blue of her eyes.
Dressed in a frilled robe whose gentle pleats drape around her small figure, Suzanne is the essence of innocence; a young girl lost in the pleasures of imagination and wondering what it will one day be like to be a mother herself.
In 'Daydream', third issue in the Blossoming of Suzanne series, Mary Vickers captures this charming scene for all time on fine Bone China from Josiah Wedgwood and Sons Limited of England.
Her technique is reminiscent of the French Impressionists Monet and Renoir. Dark impastos from a spectral palette—red. orange, yellow, green, blue indigo and violet—and applied with swift, varying strokes of a palette knife, create the modulating effect which forms the walls and serves as a background to the figure of Suzanne.
Suzanne, of course, becomes the focus of attention; the light blues and pinks, and the white of the bone china itself forming a subtle yet striking contrast with the dark background.
The intense blue of her eyes instantly directs attention to her dreamlike expression; her hair. streaked with the colours of sunlight ,frames her face and complements her rosy cheeks.
With a penchant for metaphor, Miss Vickers portrays her daughter as a young flower ready to blossom. Detailed linework, cursive, flowing brushstrokes, and daubs of red and blue combine to form the petal-like frill of Suzanne's collar. the flowers decorating her hair brush, and the blossoms of the bouquet in the vase.
In this composition of subtle shades and blended lines. there is an atmosphere of total harmony. In much the same way that the looking-glass reflects Suzanne's pensive pose, so do those lucid blue eyes reflect her innermost thoughts. And this unique plate becomes a reflection of our own lost youth; indeed, of the pleasure still to he derived from a simple daydream.
