The Russian Fairy Tales - "The Snow Maiden" by Boris Lvorykin. Limited edition. Heinrich Germany. Plate size approx. 8.25 inches. Production date 1980. Suggested retail $50.00.
Fairy tales have always been a unique expression of essential spirit and character. They have a primal, direct kind of energy not found in other types of literature, as they reflect the underlying passions and beliefs, the darkest terrors and the most enduring hopes, of a land: a people.
There was, perhaps, only one artist who could have successfully translated all the mystery, the beauty, and the poignancy of the myths and legends of "Mother Russia" into works of art: Boris Zvorykin.
Born in Russia in 1872, Zvorykin was a master of the ancient art of ornamental illustration. A centuries old heritage of Russian icon painting is evident in his exqui- site style and brilliant use of color. The frescos he painted for the cathedral in Simferopol led to frequent commissions by the Imperial Court, and his 80 foot long painting of the first patriarch is still considered a masterpiece.
Like so many artists who found themselves caught up in the turmoil of revolutionary times, Zvorykin settled in Paris in 1920. And it was there that he began his remarkable series of illustrations based on Russian fairy tales. His work was first published in this country only recently, through the efforts of Jacqueline KennedyOnassis, and he has now at last received the full American Exposure and acclaim he so well deserves.
Consultant Carol Leslie, after viewing Zvorykin's "The Snow Maiden", wrote, "The work has a delicacy of design and color that entrances the viewer. It is a window into Russian fantasy".
A triumph of the platemaker's art now, for the first time, Zvorykin's work is being made available in fine porcelain, a medium especially well-suited to this artist, in an extraordinary collection of 12 plates.
The Russian Fairy Tale Series has been hailed as a new standard of excellence in collector plates. Heinrich, a division of Villeroy & Boch and one of the world's most respected porcelain houses, has spared no time or expense in the creation of these plates... plates of such variety and complexity that they could not have been attempted even a few years ago.
A full 81/4 inches in diameter, crafted of highest quality hard-paste porcelain, they are a pure lustrous white, perfectly glazed. Each is hand-decorated, with a 24 karat gold trim. The wonderfully ornate border treatment is unique to the Russian Fairy Tale Series. It was especially designed to compliment the fine composition and vivid imagery of each scene. The delicate, intense pastels for which Zvorykin is renowned have been faithfully recreated by the master artisans of Heinrich. Even the fragile pinks and lilacs and lavenders... always the most difficult and expensive colors to transfer to porcelain... arc achieved here in unprecedented fidelity. The series will begin with three plates that tell the story of "The Snow Maiden". The first issue is a rich and lavishly detailed portrait of the lovely "Snegurochka", swathed in her lavender robe, framed by the midnight blue of a winter sky in a forest of long ago.
