Articles included in this issue: ** Steam Railway Electrifications: The advantages to be obtained through the electrification of railroads are many. An electric locomotive will handle a heavy tonnage train on mountain grades at greater speeds than a steam locomotive and will operate more efficiently, especially in cold weather, when the efficiency of the steam machine is materially reduced. – Regenerative braking –The New York, New Haven & Hartford electrification is the most comprehensive trunk line electrification in the world.-- The electrification of the New York Extension of the Pennsylvania Railroad is the most stupendous tunnel and terminal electrification in the world.– The Long Island has the heaviest and most extensive electrically operated suburban traffic in the world. – Train Control on the down grades is obtained with perfect ease and a constant speed is maintained by automatic electric regeneration of power without the use of air brakes. – The electrification of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul offered new problems as this was the first instance of the electrification of a trans-continental passenger service. – The St. Clair Tunnel electrification of the Grand Trunk was the first international tunnel electrification in America, and also the first under-water connection across the American frontier into Canada. – The Hoosac Tunnel of the Boston & Maine which was built in 1875, always was an obstructing feature to traffic until it was electrified by Westinghouse single-phase system in 1911. ** ELECTRIFICATION OF STEAM RAILWAYS -- General Electric Company -- The experience of the General Electric Company in the design and construction of heavy electric locomotives dates back to the pioneer heavy electrification of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in 1895. – The New York Central Electric zone was the first great electrification of its kind. – The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, on December 9th, 1915, placed its first electric locomotive in operation on the Rocky Mountain Division between Deer Lodge and Three Forks. – The use of GE Equipment in this installation is especially significant as the project embodies many features which make it unique. – Two types of GE locomotives are used, the spring-geared and the gearless. – The Butte, Anaconda, and Pacific is another pioneer example of the successful substitution of electricity for steam as motive power. – Gratifying Operating results have been obtained. – The Paulista Railway of Brazil is one of the most recent electrification projects where GE equipment has been installed. – The electrification of suburban lines been made compulsory in many localities and GE equipment has proved to be equal to the demands of heavy traffic and to competition with existing trolley lines. ** Electrification of Steam Railways – In many localities, either geographical of civic, conditions have placed limitations in the way of handling railway transportation by means of steam locomotives, with the consequent result that electricity has provided the only practicable solution of the motive power problems involved. ** Steam Railway Electrifications – Electrification in all industries has been the means of speeding up production and obtaining higher efficiency of operation. – Congestion problems that must be addressed: Single track sections – heavy mountain grades – congested trunk line service – freight service – hump yard and switching service – tunnels – passenger terminals ** Electrification of Steam Railways – The identification of the GE Company with many of this world’s important electrification projects, and the wide experience of the American Locomotive Company in Building railroad locomotives, enable these companies to place at the of railroad organizations a valuable consulting and manufacturing service for determining and accomplishing the best solution of the individual problems of a given road. – Plus several more articles on Electrification of Steam Railways – Condition New -
