Legends say the buffalo first came from a cave deep inside the mountains. Inside this cave, all is green and fresh, the waters are sweet and clear, the grass is lush, and wild plums and redbuds blossom.
A mighty medicine man once went into the mountains to make a pact with the buffalo. Since then, when the shaman calls, the buffalo leave their home out of their great love for the Kiowa people.
The shaman calls using the sacred power of a white buffalo's skull. Bear, wolf, fox and eagle gather in awe as the mountain rumbles and opens for the vast herds of buffalo to pour out onto the endless grasslands. The Kiowa sang praises and rejoiced, for the buffalo meant life. Their hides made tipis, clothing, and shields, their meat fed the children, and their bones, blood, and horns held great healing power.
The Kiowa people were grateful to the buffalo, and called them brothers. And the bond of love held true until the white man forced the buffalo back into their mountain never to return. But the Kiowas knew their day had ended when the call to the buffalo went unheard.
