Long ago, when the earth was new, the Sun looked down from his heavenly home and spied a beautiful Indian maid bathing in a clear stream. Sun fell instantly in love with her gentle doe eyes and graceful dancer's movements. He sent a rainbow to enfold her in its misty, kaleidoscope arms and carry the maid to her lover the Sun. They married, and lived in the World Above the World where their floor is our wide blue sky, and human cares are far away.
But the maiden sorrowed, for she missed her people. Thus she came to be called Two Hearts, for she was torn in her love. Kindly
Sun would let her climb down a rope of buffalo sinew through a hole from an uprooted potato to visit her people. She would carry their little boy, Talyi, with her, for he was half sky, half earth, and beloved by both. The animals and people of earth would rejoice at these visits, celebrating the holy, spiritual bonds between mother and child, and heaven and earth.
