In the ages of our forefathers, before the Laws and Ways came among the people, the greatest of the Lakota warriors was Chief Standing Hollow Horn.
One day he went into the mountains to hunt, but night descended and his parfieche was yet empty. He settled to sleep, but was struck by the unusual radiance of the full moon and stars. As he watched, one star journeyed to earth in a streak of brilliance, landing in the meadow before him.
Standing Hollow Horn saw a woman's form amid the shimmering incandescence. Her buckskin dress was pearly white, quilled by divine hands. Her face was serene and beautiful, with dark, shining eyes holding great mystery. In her hands she carried the first chanunpa ... the peace pipe.
The Chief took her to the council. There she taught the people the Laws and the Ways, all things that are joined in love by the holy pipe like a living prayer. When all was done, she transformed into a pure white buffalo—the most sacred living thing on earth—and departed, leaving vast herds of buffalo in her wake.
The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
