Windows on a world of Song Collection -- "The Kitchen: Gold Finches" by Kevin Daniel. Fourth issue in the series. Plate size approx 8.25 inches. The Bradford exchange. Production date. 1993. Suggested retail price $75.00.

Some meals are meant to be taken in the dining room, but for breakfast tea and toast, even a king's banquet hall couldn't compete with the subtle beauty and the gorgeous view of the room that artist Kevin Daniel paints in "The Kitchen: Gold Finches," the fourth and final issue in his Windows on a World of Song series.

Here, right outside an airy, sun-filled kitchen, hangs a feeder invitingly packed with hulled sunflower seeds—and the "diners" have assembled! They are three gold finches, as strikingly yellow as the plump lemon half that lies near the teacup on the kitchen table. These gregarious fellows like to travel in groups, and with their jaunty black caps, tails, wings and shiny, alert eyes they resemble a well-trained, uniformed army troop about to take over the local eatery.

Soon, the finches' flight call, a distinctive per-chik-o-wee, will be heard again, but for right now, master artist Kevin Daniel grants us the pleasures of sipping a cup of hot tea marvelling at these colorful backyard visitors at the same time.
