Who hasn't thrilled to the sudden flash of bright red, vivid against a spring sky, as a majestic cardinal, head accented by a proud crest and black mask, flitted in for a landing amid the blossoms of a flowering tree or bush? "In richness of plumage, elegance of motion, and strength of song, this species surpasses all its kindred in the United States," wrote John James Audubon over a century ago.

A year-round resident of shrubbery, fields, and thickets at the forest edge, the cardinal is one of the most vibrant of our favorite backyard songsters, and frequently can be seen in early spring perched in the tops of trees repeatedly whistling its extensive repertoire of song. As Audubon noted, it is "a proud musician" indeed, and sings earlier in the season than most other birds.

In "The Library: Cardinals," renowned wildlife artist Kevin Daniel re-creates all the verve and ebullience of an alert cardinal pair. The close-up, indoor perspective from the quietness of a peaceful library makes their arrival all the more thrilling and welcome as we greet the new day – and our new friends.
