Two gray wolves thread their way through the dense northern thickets of snow-draped pine, beech, and tamarack. They maintain a steady, tireless lope that will carry them many miles in hopeful pursuit of a vast herd of migrating caribou. The thick forests and wind-sheltered dells offer the caribou protection from winter's grim hold. And where the caribou go, so too must the wolves.

A crunch of ice-glazed snow alerts the wolves to an animal downwind. They freeze like statues of tempered steel, noses quivering, ears poised to catch infinitesimal clues to the intruder's identity. An arctic fox, its pure white fur blending perfectly with the landscape, ghosts across the frozen river, nervous at the wolves' presence. Amber eyes follow his flight, when a stray breeze carries a tantalizing scent from the northeast, the musky scent of—caribou!

The incredible artistry of Persis Clayton Weirs transports you to that arctic forest with her vivid images of sunlight-and-shadow, depth and emotion. Share the wolves' struggle for survival against merciless Nature in this extraordinary plate series, Winter ,Shadows.

The creation of the fine collector's plate you have just acquired and whose authenticity is certified by this document is the result of work by an international cadre of skilled artisans. After the plate art was created in the United States, a fine ceramic transfer, incorporating pigments carefully chosen to faithfully re-create the vibrant beauty of the artist's original, was created in France and Germany and permanently fired into the fine Japanese porcelain plate body at more than 1,460° Fahrenheit by talented craftsmen and craftswomen in the United States.
