Caterpillars were some of the best entertainers in my back yard when I was a boy. 1 liked the way they could arch their backs. move their heads from side to side and curl their whole bodies around a stem. They were always eating. They seemed to chew sideways instead of up and down like me. If it was very quiet and you listened hard. sometimes you could even hear one munching away.

Deanna seemed a perfect child to show with a caterpillar. She lives near our home. She wasn't even three at the time I painted her, but she was already very feminine. That's why I showed her in a ruffled pink sunsuit. She's very fair-skinned and likes keeping herself clean and her hair neat. She talks very carefully and distinctly, almost in a lady-like way. When you ask her something. she thinks before she answers. Her fingers arc soft and tiny for someone her size. They're almost like a baby's. When she puts her hands on her hips, she holds her palms out the way some ladies do. She has a good vocabulary and is very articulate.

One thing 1 love about Deanna is her constant, bright-eyed curiosity. She likes learning anything about anything.

In the painting I showed her with a big. striped Monarch caterpillar, which will turn into a Monarch butterfly. She was happy to hear birds don't like Monarch butterflies and will leave them alone.

She posed wonderfully for me. for about four minutes. Then she decided she had other things to do. In the pose I used I liked the way she's showing her curiosity with her whole body. Deanna liked it too and now can't wait to see herself on a plate.
